Treasures from THE PHILADELPHIA / DELAWARE VALLEY COLLECTION at The Willing Mind. By exclusive arrangement with The Grand Review.

Print size 16 x 24, and consciously formatted to work with a standard 16 x 24 frame, or custom framed as you see fit.

The S.S. United States sits quietly in a dock along Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia, majestic even while forlorn and a shabby. There have been any number of ideas floated concerning how to save and repurpose this superstar of mid century design and still unrivaled speed record holder for a transatlantic ocean liner.

My vote would be for a really groovy hotel, pushing the original interior design elements to even more intergalactic 50s style. Not garish, but solidly breathtaking. Then place it as the centerpiece of Penn's Landing. American and international visitors would make an extra effort to make sure Philadelphia was a major part of their vacation experience, just so they could include a night or two aboard the S.S. United States.

When I've taken this print out to a show, it is hard to clearly describe the personal, emotional attachment people have to this ship. I have been lucky to hear their excited, gushing tales of emigrating to this country as a child, of long being told by goofy parents that they were conceived on board, that their dear old aunt and uncle still revere the experience of their return to Europe for a visit on board this ship that represented so much of what was good and forward thinking about America.

My wife and kids went with me when the ship, ragged as it is, was lit up at night for the first time in its current location. I took a framed copy of this image, restored from an original in our collection, down to the event to offer it to The Conservancy for an ongoing fundraiser for them. I'd offer it at cost to them, and they'd sell them and keep the rest.

Funny thing was I had one copy with me, and this was a crowd who was fairly rabid in their fanatic dedication to this ship and huge numbers demanded to see the print as we strolled. Could I have sold a few hundred copies right there? The rolling eyes of my beloved seemed to suggest just that. Ouch!

A NOTE ON OUR PROCESS, OUR CHOICES AND THE QUALITY OF THE GRAPHIC CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO OUR PRINTS.

Every print we deem exciting enough to present to the public via our Etsy store or available here at our studio has gone through a number of steps. The first of those is always discovering and falling in love with an obscure image, always an original that we can hold in our hands. That image is speaking to us, sometime screaming “Don’t leave me here. See what I am, what I was, what I can be, what I SHOULD be!”

There is a real sense of excitement involved, and a great many smiles and knowing grins when we make that deal and bring that ancient print, that battered photo, that scrap of ephemera that contains some scrap of genius from an unknown commercial artist home with us, knowing already how we mean to approach its restoration.

There is the heady promise of a further hunt just as real as what drags a weekend fisherman out of bed at 3AM to work a favorite brook as we start our research, looking for that great backstory, and both ready and willing to tumble down as many rabbit holes as are revealed to us to get that story.

Then there is a meticulous digital restoration that is as often as much fun as riding a vintage Moto Guzzi on a winding coastal road. I don’t care if that sounds crazy, it really is like jumping in the saddle! So many choices, so many chances to take to subtly or spectacularly give new life to otherwise permanently obscure images.

This dedication and the ongoing rush of joy in the accomplishment of it, and the opportunity to share the results in our studio and here on Etsy, is the fire of passion that keeps these engines roaring. We make every effort to ensure our customers are not just satisfied but thrilled, and we happily stand 100% behind our work.

Comfortable right out of the box. Great style and well made. The more you wear the softer they get but maintain their overall appearance.

Comfortable fit for slip-in fabric shoes
Size: 14, Color: Black/Black
My first experience with Marc Joseph. I typically purchase dress and casual work shoes from Florsheim and occasionally Rockport. I'm giving these four stars because the initial fit and feel appear solid. Depending on the shoe brand I wear a size 14 or 15. My feet are slightly wide but I don't alway need wide fit. These size 14 fit well with wide enough toe box. I've tried slip in shoes before and they just don't feel right. These somehow work and there is no heel slip. My only reservation is the high lip on the heel for slip-in and hope they dont catch pant hems. I gave 4 stars because I'll have to determine durability. Granted they are a light fabric shoe with a soft rubber tread. I'd like them to last for at least 6 months..and use them for business casual work wear during warm weather.
