We’re so thrilled to announce that Sasami will be teaching a songwriting workshop at School of Song beginning on Sunday, April 5th. From her background as a classically trained French horn player to her multi-genre explorations, Sasami will share her perspectives as a songwriter, producer, and vocalist.

The course will explore a range of topics, including:

Observed Patterns in Pop Music: Sasami will share her recent fascinations within pop music, such as repeated four-bar phrases, the impact of vocal range, and character arc as we aim to write songs with more universal connection.

Starting with the Voice: “I always end up writing songs where I least expect to, in the grocery store or on a hike.” By starting with the voice, we find songs that sit more comfortably in our natural range, thus leading to more resonant performances and recordings.

Orchestration, Genre, & Technology: Walking through the evolution of a song from voice memo to the iPad to a fully orchestrated chamber ensemble, Sasami will share insights into the impact of a song’s instrumentation and reflect on fluid boundaries that we use to define genre.

The Album as a Dissertation: We will examine how to live as a lifelong student of songwriting by building a relationship with the creative process where we approach the destination of the album as we would a student’s dissertation.

Here are a few words from Sasami about the course:

"People like to refer to music or song as nouns, but I prefer them in the verb form. I grew up playing french horn and singing church music, so before I even knew what a composition was, it was just something we did. For some, songwriting is mathematical, methodical and achieves a level of human accomplishment that is breathtaking. For others it is more spiritual and although technically instruments are held, it’s an act that transcends the physical world. For a lot of us it’s literally an impulse that we can’t help like burping. Any of the ways- it’s all made up!

There is no right or wrong way to sing or make music, there are only those who follow their curiosity and those who don’t. Even the concept of a “song”… sure it feels good to put a name to a bundle of energy and call it universal, but I don’t even know how I feel about objectifying something as unbounded as music making!

I’ve studied classical music, improvisation, rock-folk-pop songwriting, and all I know is that I love the feeling of visiting a musical realm, searching for the message and doing my best to wrangle it- maybe a song is more like a beast or spirit that we cajole into our arms? Songwriting is a practice, it’s worship, it’s study, it’s exploration. In my course I am going to guide us through a few of the infinite ways to approach it and find stories in our work."

FAQ:

Q: What musical experience should I have?
A: People across all musical levels will be able to gain something from the course.
Q: What if I've never written a song before? Can I still participate in this workshop?
A: Yes! As with any new skill, just starting is usually the hardest part. The songs are optional and this workshop will provide the structure and accountability we all need to get started and follow through, for beginners and old guard writers alike.
Q: Is there an enrollment cap?
A: Nope! This is a lecture-style class with open enrollment. The song shares will be optional with breakout rooms of 3-4 people.
Q: Will Sasami give me feedback on my songs?
A: Due to the class size, we cannot guarantee that you'll get Sasami's feedback on your songs. However, our teachers are active on our song sharing platform and may leave comments on students' submissions.
Q: I can't make the lecture times for some (or all) of the classes. Can I still participate?
A: Yes! We send out the recordings of lectures at the end of each class day, so you can watch the lectures on your own time.

If you're looking for a comfortable thick and nice turtle neck this is the one. It's nice and form fitting nice weight to it to keep you warm. But not to thick that you cant just wear it on a regular sunny day if you wanted. The design pattern Is also very nice. Can dress it up or down. I bought the black and then immediately bought the rust orange color for my friend once he tried on mine he wanted one immediately so I gifted him one. He loves it. Definitely worth the buy. Excellent quality. I bought a Large 5"11 165lbs

A true turtleneck that retains a snug high neck.
Color: White, Size: X-Large
I've found this brand to have gotten better over the years as far as offering the American market what it needs in terms of realistic sizing. I only wish they'd realize that there are a lot of us who are long in the back and arms where my only choice is to go a size up and sacrifice a slim fit for sleeves that are long enough plus a back that doesn't go up past my waist just because I reach up for something, that and I like to be warm. So these are such nice quality turtlenecks that it's hard to complain about but maybe the company will read this. The snug neck stays up is plus number one since that's why I'm buying a full neck. They come with very nice weaves in the fabric, good enough for casual or formal wear. Finally the warmth you seek is there but I've worn them in what most would think isn't the right temp for a turtleneck. Also they have them in white! Yes, a lot of others just don't for reasons I can't fathom, and the pic you're seeing is accurate, these will form to your shape without being ridiculously thin material. Several washes later and they are as fine a garment as when I first wore them. I've only found one other brand that compares to these but it's much more expensive, COOFANDY is affordable in these times of expensive everything. Warm but also a lightweight shirt, I've gotten them really dirty with actual dirt and it washes out so well you'd never know it. Don't let my taking off one star stop you, try one yourself and you'll be coming back for more.
