Even though Pooja and Sunita are sisters, while weaving this rug the elder
sister Pooja felt more like a sister in-law and not a sister because she used to
be very protective and scold Sunita. In the rug, the abrupt changes in the
design are owing to Pooja’s reprimands to change the design. The rug is
telling of their memories of childhood, the fields, the forest, and collecting
wood together. At the first glance, the rug appears to be pre-planned and
designed, but it is instead a result of spontaneity and a precious sisterly bond.

About Pooja & Sunita
Sisters Sunita and Pooja are 30 and 26 year-old with 15 and 10 years of
experience in weaving, respectively. They hail from the village of
Samarthpura, Rajasthan. They started their journey with Jaipur Rugs when
they began looking for work after marriage, around 6 years ago. They have 2
children each—Sunita has 2 daughters and Poonam has a son and has
adopted Sunita’s 3rd daughter. For them, weaving is a family tradition that has
provided the opportunity to change their lives, and they plan to pass the skill
to their children. They are married in the same house to carpenters and are
often inspired by the designs used by their husbands in furniture-making.
