As the demand for breech loading firearms grew during the civil war, countries faced a challenge: how to convert their surplus muzzle loading weapons into modern, metallic cartridge weapons. The solution came in the form of the Snider or Tabatiere conversion method, which was widely used in the late 1870's. However, as quantities of French converted rifles entered the surplus market with no buyers, a decision was made to repurpose them as inexpensive shotguns. This involved reaming out the rifling, removing original markings, and proofing the barrels. The rifles were then modified with cut-down stocks, a front sight bead, and the removal of the rifle sights.
