Andy Schumm is a remarkable cornetist rooted in the jazz traditions of the 1920s. Based in Chicago, he has performed throughout the United States and abroad with bands such as the West End Jazz Band, Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, Jim Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band, and the Archipelago Project. With his Flatland Gang, Schumm revives obscure but deserving jazz tunes of the '20s. For this freshly-recorded 78 rpm disc, the band plays "Down in Gallion" (originally recorded by John Williams' Synco Jazzers in 1927) and "The Swing" (based on the recording by Johnny De Droit's New Orleans Orchestra in 1924).

In addition to Andy Schumm on cornet, the band for this record consists of John Otto, clarinet and alto saxophone; Frank Gualtieri, trombone; Jason Goldsmith, tenor saxophone; David Boeddinghaus, piano; Jim Barrett, banjo; Dave Bock, tuba; and Josh Duffee, drums. Both sides were recorded direct to two-track stereo with no editing in Racine, Wisconsin, 12 March 2011. The sleeve art was designed by Joe Busam.

Note: This is a stereo, microgroove, 10-inch vinyl record meant to be played at 78 RPM. It is compatible with all modern turntables (post-1950s) fitted with a stereo cartridge and capable of spinning at 78 RPM. For best results, we strongly recommend a cartridge capable of tracking at 3-4 grams. Rugged cartridges designed for DJ use (like the Stanton 500, Shure M44-7, or Ortofon VNL) work better than delicate, high-end "audiophile" cartridges. Use an ordinary LP stylus; no special stylus is required. This record should NOT be played on vintage "wind-up" machines with steel needles.
