It has an overall light golden tone to the wood with a fine, even grain texture. There is beautiful zone spalting that changes the wood tone to a darker shade of brown in the spalted zones. There is plentiful black line spalting on the exposed faces. The grain runs long and more or less straight, parallel to the long axis

Silver Maple Block SM-245 2.3" x 2.3" x 15" 1.875 lbs. This is a beautiful, heavily-spalted spindle of Texas-grown Silver Maple. It has an overall light golden tone to the wood with a fine, even grain texture. There is beautiful zone spalting that changes the wood tone to a darker shade of brown in the spalted zones. There is plentiful black-line spalting on the exposed faces. The grain runs long and more-or-less straight, parallel to the long axis of the spindle. This wood has been fully air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. The block is rough-sawn with some surface irregularities. There may be a few bug boreholes present. I've taken photos of all faces, so please scroll down below the first 3 photos to see more images. This block has a few end-grain cracks that you may wish to secure with CA glue prior to turning. |
