Christian McBride Big Band’s Without Further Ado, Vol. 1 swings with authority and affection - a jubilant spotlight on great songwriting refracted through bold brass and velvet groove. It is a celebration of legacy, filtered through one of modern jazz’s most commanding bandleaders.

Released in 2023, the album finds McBride reimagining songs by beloved artists with the muscle and finesse of his Grammy-winning big band. Known for his virtuosity and deep pocket, McBride curates a set that bridges jazz tradition with soul, pop, and R&B lineage. The arrangements are lush without being fussy, giving each tune room to breathe while still flexing tight ensemble precision.

Standouts include a sly, strutting take on Mule, a glowing rework of More Than This, and a rhythmically charged rendition of Used To Be My Girl. Throughout, the horn sections punch and sigh in perfect formation, while the rhythm section - anchored by McBride’s resonant bass - keeps everything buoyant and irresistibly kinetic. Guest vocalists and soloists step in and out of the spotlight, adding texture and personality to every chart.

Pressed on vinyl, Without Further Ado, Vol. 1 feels tailor-made for side-long immersion, each arrangement unfolding with cinematic sweep. For collectors and jazz devotees, it is both a reverent nod to songwriting craft and a reminder that big band music still knows how to throw a proper party.

2 for 1!
Two iterations of an Ernest Hemingway classic short story. Burt Lancaster kicks it off with the 1946 version followed by the Lee Marvin led 1964 version. Both are great and plenty of criterion extras making this among my favorite spine in their awesome collection. There’s also a Russian student take on the short story adding a third version of a great story. Highly recommended and if it’s 50% a must buy. I already owned it and gave this as a gift who instantly called me two days later with high praise of the films.

A Favorite All-Time Classic
I've always enjoyed this classic film. Ava Gardner is my favorite all-time actress. She's great in the role of Kitty. Burt Lancaster is also fine as the torn man in love with a woman he struggles to have. This is based on one of Hemingway's short stories, and they did a fine job. Same with the remake in 1964 with Lee Marvin and Clu Gulagher. You will not be disappointed in either version, but my favorite is the orignal.

1 Ernest Hemingway story, 2 different movie takes, very cool.
I like value. Two movie versions of a cool story for the price of one, I am in. The Burt Lancaster version is film noir cool, while the Lee Marvin has that manic 60’s television feel. The Lee Marvin version gets bonus for Ronald Reagan’s portrayal of the heavy. He is quite menacing.
