The unlikely beginnings of the East India Company—from Tudor origins and rivalry with the superior Dutch—to laying the groundwork for future British expansion.

The East India Company was the largest commercial enterprise in British history, yet its roots in Tudor England are often overlooked. The Tudor revolution in commerce led ambitious merchants to search for new forms of investment, not least in risky overseas enterprises—and for these "adventurers" the most profitable bet of all would be on the Company.

Through a host of stories and fascinating details, David Howarth brings to life the Company's way of doing business—from the leaky ships and petty seafarers of its embattled early days to later sweeping commercial success. While the Company's efforts met with disappointment in Japan, they sowed the seeds of success in India, setting the outline for what would later become the Raj. Drawing on an abundance of sources, Howarth shows how competition from European powers was vital to success—and considers whether the Company was truly "English" at all, or rather part of a Europe-wide movement.

Not your typical tale…
Format: Kindle
Great writing, rather mesmerizing in its way. The mixture of deep state conspiracy, a smattering of actual truth, and mythical freely pull you in. The artwork is a bit over the top at times; I see the intention behind this, but it harms rather than helps the story at some points. This abstract/high concept art crap could have seriously been dialed back and then better assisted the narrative. Not to say that this isn’t worth the read… I gave it 5 Stars because the tale itself is well told and very riveting.

What is going on?
Format: Kindle
I don't know what is going on in this, but I am fully invested. The art is crazy good and the story telling is good as well. I'm looking forward to the next volume and I hope it contains some answers for me. I pray that this is not drawn on for a long long time. I pray that this story has an actual and satisfying ending.

Great weird horror
Format: Kindle
The Department of Truth: The End of the World is the first trade volume of this series, collecting issues 1-5. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but I enjoyed seeing a world building element I was familiar with in fantasy be applied to conspiracy theories. I also loved the art. It’s really stunning! I almost want to buy a print edition in addition to my Kindle/ComiXology edition because it’s so beautiful. I found the plot and concept compelling and can’t wait to read volume 2.
