An excavation and survey in Northern Shetland 2006-2010. Unst, the most northerly island in Britain, at the heart of the Viking Seaways, is locally claimed as the first footfall of the Vikings in the North. The density of surviving remains of rural Viking Settlement is unsurpassed, even in the Viking Homelands. Yet, prior to the Viking Unst project, no-one had a very clear idea of what Viking longhouses looked like or how the Vikings lived when they made these islands their home. This volume presents the results of the excavation of the three longhouse sites: Belmont, Hamar and Underhoull. The results provide an unusual opportunity to look comprehensively at Viking settlement in the North Atlantic and to gain new insight into the period.
