With Evans’s Most Famous Beardsley Portrait

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey; Frederick H. EVANS. Grotesques by Aubrey Beardsley. Facsimile Platinum Prints by Frederick H. Evans from the Twelve Original Drawings in his Collection with a Portrait Frontispiece. Twenty-Five Copies Privately Printed. S.l.: s.n. 1919.

4to. Publisher’s printed wrappers, housed in a clamshell morocco-backed box with cloth sides, raised bands ruled in gilt; marbled edges, red gilt morocco lettering-pieces; ff. [13], comprising 12 platinum prints after drawings by Aubrey Beardsley and a portrait frontispiece within a handsome Art Nouveau woodcut border signed by Evans in pencil and dated 1919, the prints and frontispiece mounted on brown card, the last 4 ff. provided in facsimile and mounted on paper slightly warmer in colour; c. 60-mm split to spine, but holding, a few spots to wrappers; slight offset to blank versos; else very well preserved.

One of twenty-five privately printed copies, extremely rare, of this handsome collection of facsimile platinum prints after twelve original drawings by Beardsley from the collection of his friend, the Pictorialist photographer Frederick Evans, also including a signed photograph of Beardsley by Evans, perhaps the most famous portrait of the artist.

A friend of George Bernard Shaw, Evans was a proprietor of Jones’ and Evans’ Bookshop near the Guildhall in Cheapside until 1898, when he turned to photography full-time; a monumental photographer of architecture, he was a member of the Linked Ring photographic society and soon befriended Alfred Stieglitz; he was the first British photographer to have his work featured in Stieglitz’s seminal photographic journal Camera Work.

Evans met the seventeen-year-old Beardsley in 1889, when Beardsley was working as a clerk for an insurance company. The shop was ‘but a minute’s walk for Beardsley within a twelvemonth of his coming to London town … Here Beardsley would turn in after his city work was done, as well as at the luncheon hour, to discuss the new books; and thereby won into the friendship of Frederick Evans who was early interested in him’ (Macfall, p. 39). Within a year, he was visiting daily. ‘Thus it came about that Beardsley made his first literary friendship in the great city. He would take a few drawings he made at this time and discuss them with Frederick Evans. Soon they were on so friendly a footing that Evans would “swap” the books for which the youth craved in exchange for drawings’ (ibid.). Indeed, it was Evans who secured Beardsley’s first commission, recommending him to J.M. Dent for Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. The portrait of Beardsley included here is one of two famous photographs Evans took of Beardsley around 1894: here, Beardsley gazes downwards, his head in his hands. The portrait frontispiece is here signed by Evans and dated 1919.

The present illustrations, from original drawings of Beardsley from Evans’s collection, were first published in the 1893 Bon-Mots of Sydney Smith and Richard Brindsley Sheridan, a small-format volume in which Beardsley’s illustrations appear as minute in-text illustrations or tailpieces, measuring not more than four centimetres; they can be appreciated in Grotesques by Aubrey Beardsley not as mere ornaments to the text, but as works of art in their own right. Beardsley died of tuberculosis on 16 March 1898, aged only twenty-five. Published some two decades after Beardsley’s death, the present work appears to follow a similar set, in larger format, issued in a limited edition of ten copies in 1913, under the title Grotesques by Aubrey Beardsley. Enlarged Facsimiles in Platinotype, comprising reproductions of the twelve drawings included here but issued without the portrait (we find only one copy, at Princeton).

We find a single copy in the UK, at the National Art Library, and one in the US (Metropolitan Museum of Art, the portrait of Beardsley unsigned).

great scale (read tips for its super sensitivity)
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
in hopes this will help anyone else who bought this scale- this thing is super sensitive to vibrations. if your scale is getting off calibration for seemingly no reason, make sure the sides and the back aren’t touching anything else and that the bottom is on a flat surface and it will fix it entirely, trust me!! but aside from that, this scale works absolutely perfectly. it’s just the right size for my morning coffee, has great battery life, and is really straightforward to use. plus the silicone top makes it really easy to clean and looks nice on my countertop. the timer is super convenient for making coffee, this is an amazing scale for this price point

1 year review: Excellent coffee scale
Color: Onyx Black
I bought this about a year ago and have used it daily ever since. The scale is easy to read, fast to update, and is precise. My previous coffee scale cracked from the repeated heating from my v60 carafe even with a silicone pad within 6 months. This scale has endured and I'm quite happy with it's durability. It's accurate and precise enough I actually use it with my bread machine as well. It's a nice, low weight scale overall. Cleaning is fairly easy, I just wipe down with a damp cloth. You can pull the silicone pad off and wash it more thoroughly if you want. My only down side is that I find the batteries drain a little quickly. My normal kitchen scale can last years on a button battery, while I usually have to replace the batteries here every 6 months. I don't use the scale for more than 3-4 minutes at a time daily and once or twice a week a second time per day, and whether the battery life is due to the brightness of the display or the polling frequency of the scale, it's a minor enough quibble to not ding it's rating. It's not a cheap scale, but it appears to be one of those "buy once for a long time" investments. If you're serious about coffee dosing and measuring your water for pour over, it's easy to recommend.

Excellent coffee scale!
Love this scale! The display is pleasing, high-contrast and very clear. It has a silicone cover, and there are zero gaps around the screen and buttons, so it's easily cleaned and I don't worry about damaging the internals with water or crumbs. There is a tiny bit of float, typically less than a gram, and only occasionally. For example, I'll weigh out 19.3g of beans, seal the bag, and come back to 18.9g. It's minor enough and infrequent enough that it doesn't concern me at all. The readout is quick and responsive, and I love the timer. At first it seems a little confusing to switch between counting up and counting down, but after doing it once I have no trouble with it even half-asleep. Just hold the units button, press it again to change between modes, and use power & tare to set minutes and seconds if counting down (use play/pause to confirm each setting). Takes less than 10 seconds. Overall it's quick, accurate, and well-made. I love that it has a much smaller footprint than my old kitchen scale, and looks sleek on the counter. Perfect addition to my coffee station! I also highly recommend their gooseneck kettle if you're in the market ☕

Wobby? Fixable!
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
After a year and half of excellent performance, the platter became more and more wobbly but the readings were consistent. Finally, it was too wobbly and the readings were erratic. There was no obvious way to try to fix it and I couldn't find any help online. I wrote to Greater Goods customer service. While I was awaiting a reply I could barely see that there was a screw inside that appeared to connect to the back right behind the paper label. I pressed on the label, and it broke through to reveal...two screws! I tightened them both and my scale is back in action just like new! It's ready for years of upcoming service. If your unit starts to wobble, it's almost certainly fixable this way. Oh, and Urmila from customer service just reached out and I gave them the good news.

works great
Size: EK6002
i've had it for a couple of weeks now, and i will say, it works well. calibration isn't in the instructions, but, if you hit and hold all 4 buttons when you turn it on, after it says hello, it will enter cal mode. pressing unit advances to the next screen, which is the auto shut off time. if you turn off the power, or use all 4 buttons to reset it, it does not seem to save, so you will have to purchase calibration weights in order to change it. after setting the auto shutoff, it then lists the 3000 g, which is the max weight. it seems you can change it, but i haven't tried. the next shows random numbers, seemingly the raw value of the scale sensor, then it goes through asking for a 500g calibration weight, and after that, a 2000g calibration weight. the 1000g weight doesn't seem to be necessary. after calibration, the scale seems to do pretty well with the calibration weights. weighing in the center and in the corners seem to be repeatable, although it may be a little off at the very edges or corners. the mat that goes on top of the scale has a hangover on the left side, which helps keep it in place, but it can slide up and down. using the scale to measure liquid, it seems to refresh quick enough to easily allow you to gauge when to stop, although, it may depend on how quickly you pour. one thing to note, the precision mentioned in the description. this scale is accurate to 0.1g from 0-500g, 0.5g from 501-1000g, and 1g from 1001-3000g. this isn't over the weight range of the scale exactly, but rather over the displayed weight. meaning, if you decided to weigh pour over or something, in something heavy (or a collection of things), if you tare out the weight (zero it out to measure the difference), it will still display the first 500g up to 0.1g accuracy. that makes the 3000g limit of the scale much more useful. lastly, this is a rebranded scale...many make the same scale under a different brand. i can't remember which combination of buttons it was, but if you held 2 buttons at the same time, it would bring up a muted speaker (no sound) icon, even though this scale doesn't have sound to begin with. i'm very happy with this scale. the price was good, and realizing that the 0.1g accuracy works up to 500g after taring is great. i used it to measure the water and ice in my 64 oz yeti, to figure out how much water i was actually drinking (got very close to the limit of 3000g).
