It would first see its first actions during the Sino-Soviet split and subsequent border clashes of the late 1950s. The IS-3 heavy tank’s first main combat action was during the 1956 Hungarian intervention.
The IS-3 underwent a modernisation extension of life program in 1960 and was redesignated the IS-3M. Improvements included a newer 12.7mm DShKM machine-gun, a TVN-2 night vision device for the driver, replacement engines, an air filter system, improved road wheels from the T-10 tank, better external stowage, and dust skirts were added over the suspension.
