The guide rolls on top of the stone with the edge in contact with the stone. A few strokes later you have a razor sharp edge. It holds tools from 2mm to 65mm wide at a constant angle.
To use the guide:
Ensure that the roller rotates freely. Oil and clean it after use.
For honing a plane iron, use the wider jaws. To hold it at a 25° angle, project the end 50 mm (2") from the edge of the jaws. Furthermore, to hold it at a 30° angle, project the end 38 mm (1-1/2") from the edge of the jaws.
For honing a wood chisel, use the narrow jaws. To hold it at a 25° angle, project the end 40 mm (1-5/8") from the edge of the jaws. Furthermore, to hold it at a 30° angle, project the end 30 mm (1-3/16") from the edge of the jaws.
