Discover a profound exploration of modern death rituals in 'When Death Falls Apart'. This insightful book, published by The University of Chicago Press in 2024, examines Japan's unique Buddhist goods industry and the evolving perceptions of death and remembrance. Through an ethnographic lens, this compelling read delves into the concept of necromaterials, shedding light on the dynamic relationship between living practices and memories of the deceased.

Set against the backdrop of changing societal values, this book illustrates how Japan’s historical and cultural views on death are rapidly transforming. With a focus on the ‘grave of the graves’ (o-haka no haka) in the Fukuyama mountains, author Gould presents a vivid narrative on the intimate rituals that have defined Japanese society for centuries. However, with declining birth rates and increasing secularization, these time-honored traditions face challenges that demand attention.

The author poses critical questions about the future of religious technology and how rituals can adapt to contemporary life. Explore the intersections of memory and material culture through captivating scenes in carpentry studios, funeral homes, and family kitchens. As traditions fade, 'When Death Falls Apart' offers visions of rebirth in ritual practices, including modern adaptations of butsudan and innovative approaches like scattering ashes. This book is not just a study but an invitation to reflect on the implications of necrosociality in an age of rapid change.

Embrace the journey of understanding death in a culturally rich context—perfect for readers interested in anthropology, religious studies, or the sociology of death.

Hands down, the WORST printer I have ever owned. In THIRTY years.
I love Epson print quality so when my Epson finally bit the dust I HAD TO have another Epson. After lots of research I bought this one. It takes FOREVER to wake up and print. It shouldn’t take 5 minutes to wake up. I am a VERY light user. At the time of this initial review I'd maybe printed 500 pages total, so it's not like this thing has been put through the ringer or anything. This thing CONSTANTLY jams. Or says it’s jammed. It may or may not be. But you’ll have to go through the motions every time you want to use it anyhow. It burns through ink faster than a cracked out toddler dumping paint all over the floors and walls. WHEN ONE COLOR RUNS OUT YOU CAN NO LONGER PRINT B&W I’m sure there are more reasons why I hate this printer, I’ll try to come back to add them if I think of them. THIS PRINTER HAS INSPIRED ME TO DISASSEMBLE MY OLD EPSON AND BECOME A PRINTER REPAIR TECH IN MY FREE TIME IN HOPES OF GETTING THAT ONE TO WORK. I don’t recommend that route either. I think Epson has lost me forever. All I want is a printer with their great print quality, two paper trays that accept different sizes, and a rear loader for heavier paper, that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. My old WorkForce did all of that beautifully and for whatever reasons they decided that shouldn’t be an option anymore. RUDE. UPDATE: This pile of junk will ALSO say that it is out of paper when in fact it is not. I hate it, so so so much.

Knowledgeable and helpful
I purchased a new Sony TV and was having a lot of trouble coordinating the settings. After struggling for 1.5 days, I gave up and called the number for Asurion. There was a reasonable wait while I found the "right" tech person, but it was worthwhile. He was knowledgeable and patient. He gave me confidence and we worked together to solve all my issues. At the end he became pressuring, wanted me to buy a monthly gig with them.
