First edition, signed. Accompanied by nine loosely inserted letters sent by the author, and a photograph. The tipped-in letter states that "I have seen no reviews of The Twofold Gandhi as yet, but I have had a warm letter of approval from an American in Virginia". Holmes attempts to portray two sides to Gandhi, the first being the "non-political Gandhi, the servant of the Indian poor, [who] had no word to say against the Christian Missions in India", and his development into "another man", becoming "an uncompromising and resentful enemy of the spread of Christianity in India". Holmes was seemingly a part of the Oxford Mission to Calcutta, Brotherhood of the Epiphany.
