First edition of these fascinating and artistic photographic portraits of New Zealand Aborigines, all people photographed in front of vernacular architecture, carved panels, and in traditional costumes. The 'permanent Carbonette photos' are remarkably well printed, very sharp and with good tonal range.
Thomas Pringle (1858-1931) was a member of the Wellington Photographic Association and subsequently employed by the newly formed Department of Tourism which then became The National Publicity Studios. He produced an early series of coloured postcards of New Zealand and self- published this book and others. He eventually donated his collection of negatives to the Government which are now housed for research purposes in The Turnbull Library, a part of The National Library in Wellington.
