ABOUT THE ONDEMAND WEBINAR

Middle Grade is a rapidly expanding genre -- and it's exciting to see the constant influx of new titles into the market! But writing Middle Grade can be tricky to execute and ultimately demands an eye for tone and style, and a steady hand for structural development. So whether you're 30,000 words in or just starting the first chapter, there are key skills you'll want to master before submitting your manuscript for submission, for example honing in on themes, working on character development, and becoming familiar with your audience.

Jaida and Danielle have been in the publishing industry for over three years. Both are currently building their lists at New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc. and work extensively in the Middle Grade genre, which will help prospective authors develop their Middle Grade projects to their full potential.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

  • The elements that differentiate MG from other age groups (tone, structure, word count, topic, theme, etc.)
  • The Middle Grade market: what's hot now, past trends, future projections
  • What works in Middle Grade, what doesn't work, and why
  • Writing to a Middle Grade audience
  • Common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid when writing Middle Grade
  • Must-Read Middle Grade titles - and why they're important
  • Where to find information on agents that rep Middle Grade
  • Important resources for writing Middle Grade and how to use them

INSTRUCTORS:

Jaida Temperly, Literary Agent, is very excited to be building her client list! For MG and YA titles, she's drawn to quirky, dark stories (The Mysterious Benedict Society, Coraline, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, etc.) For Adult Fiction, she loves stories with strong mystery, art history, or religious undertones (The Westing Game, A Discovery of Witches, and The DaVinci Code). She loves logic puzzles, anything by Wes Anderson, horticulture, and everything related to Scotland! You can follow her on Twitter: @jltemperly.

Following her completion of the Denver Publishing Institute after graduation, Danielle Barthel began interning at Writers House. While there, she realized she wanted to put her English degree and love of the written word to work at a literary agency. She worked as a full-time assistant for three years, and continues to help keep the New Leaf offices running smoothly in her role of Coordinator of Team and Client Services.

Danielle is looking for upper MG, YA, adult, and non-fiction manuscripts. She'd love to find an amazing MG epistolary, engrossing YA realistic contemporary stories like THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE and ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, well-crafted fantasies, and retellings of all kinds. Adult family dramas and upmarket women's fiction are also on her wish list. A strong romantic subplot, especially with expertly crafted tension, is never a bad thing, and she's particularly fond of historical romance (especially set in England). For non-fiction, she's open to unique and poignant lifestyle and cookbooks.

Perfect
Color: Blue
I am fostering a Husky/Black and Tan Coon dog. We have had her since early February. She has chewed up a lot of my shoes. She destroyed my other dogs stuffed squeaky toys. So I decided to buy her this ball. She reminds me of Linus from Charlie Brown. She wakes up with this ball and falls asleep with it. I’ve not had another shoe fatality. This ball is her most loved possession. It is pretty tough. Now She did kill the squeaker within the first few hours (which trust me I am GOOD with that! I’ve never put treats in it. The rope is still attached. After this review I am going to buy her another as a back up!

Favorite fetch
We have a 70 lb Aussie and a 13 lb Havanese who compete with each other to fetch toys. This hedgehog is their favorite, largely due to the loud assertive squeak. Our big dog is a chewer and has a history of getting to any squeaker in a toy, once nearly choking when successfully removing one from a smaller toy. She still tries to chew on this toy, going straight for the nose but has not yet gotten to the squeaker which is large enough that I don't believe would be a choking hazard if she did get to it. No soft toy is indestructible, but compared to other plush toys, this is more durable. Once the nose has been chewed off, I have simply hand stitched the hole closed and from then on she's no longer interested in chewing through it. Have run through the wash and comes out fine. When one eventually wears out I order a replacement and the 2 puppies compete once again over ownership.
