Trans-Atlantic Radicalism

RUSSELL, John, Lord. The Life and Times of Charles James Fox. London: Richard Bentley. 1850-1866.

Three volumes, 8vo. Original publisher’s blue pebble-grained cloth, partly uncut and unopened, spines lettered in gilt, covers ornamented in blind, brown endpapers with publisher’s advertisements; I: pp. xv, [1 (blank], 366, 2 (advertisements); II: viii, 380; III: xii, 404; spine ends bumped, slight wear to corners and extremities, slight foxing to fore-edge of textblock; sporadic light spotting; overall a very good set.

First edition of Lord John Russell’s biography of Whig statesman Charles James Fox (1749–1806), Britain’s first Foreign Secretary, rival of William Pitt, a supporter of American independence and the French Revolution, and a friend of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson; all three volumes are rarely seen together, and are rarer still in the uniform publisher’s bindings.

John Russell presents his biography of Fox as a tribute informed by his lifelong Whig convictions. ‘The defining moment in [Russell’s] politics, which occurred nine years before he was born, was George III’s dismissal of Charles James Fox in 1783. Throughout his life he worked with a statue of Fox on his desk’. (ODNB) Similarly to Fox, he believed that, even amid the age of revolutionary societies, the danger to Parliament came not from the people but from an overreaching monarch.

These three volumes offer substantial insight into the struggles of the American colonies and intellectual movements which would shape the emerging United States. Fox promoted the work of Tom Paine and other campaigners for Parliamentary reform, and in 1787 formed the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Appointed Britain’s first Foreign Secretary in 1806, Fox also delivered a legendary and impassioned speech in the House of Commons condeming the slave trade.

Good Basic Chair with a Few Drawbacks
Color: Black
I bought this Amazon Basics office task chair for my boyfriend who works from home. Overall, it’s a decent, simple chair that gets the job done for everyday use, especially if you just need something functional and affordable. However, there are a couple of downsides. The recline doesn’t go back as much as he would like, so it’s not ideal if you prefer to lean back and relax between tasks. Also, after about a month of use, the wheels don’t glide as smoothly as they did at first, which can be a bit frustrating when rolling across the floor. Overall, it’s a solid basic chair for light use, but if you want something with a deeper recline or super smooth mobility long-term, you might want to consider other options. Still a reasonable purchase depending on your needs.

Had for just over 9 years now and still pretty solid
Color: Black
I ordered this chair back in December 2015 for our front office, and it's been moved to our back shop where we fabricate. We're not a gentle work space by any stretch of the imagination; we build stuff and it's messy, lots of tools etc. This chair has held up surprisingly well! The faux leather is delaminating almost entirely on the seat but honestly, I'd expect that for faux leather on something that is used daily. The seat pad, in my opinion, has gotten de-poofed. So it's not plush anymore but still usable. I've asked the guy that's using it if they want an upgrade/update and they said they like it and don't want to change it out just yet. That's saying something! The size is nice and wide. We've had a range of differently sized folks sit in the chair over the years and the seat was always comfortable (less now without so much seat poof), I was able to sit cross-legged and the whole chair felt sturdy then as it does now. All of the standards functions you'd want an office chair to do, it can still do: it goes up and down smoothly, it rolls just fine, it's still pivot-reclines comfortably and doesn't feel like it's going to topple. I like it!

Good enough
Color: Black
Comfortable chair. Easy to put together. Allen nuts aren't cut perfectly so sometimes hard to get the wrench in there. My biggest complaint, and I didn't even realize this until I sat down in it, the arm rests are not adjustable and they are a little short for my liking.

I love it!
Color: Black
This chair is so comfy! I also love that it goes up super high (as a tall man it's nice to have the kicking my feet sensation... Lol). It's wider than I imagined and it the first chair with arms that I can fit in as an almost 500 pound dude. The lumbar support is nice and also adjustable, too. The wheels are high quality and move you fast. It was pretty easy to put together, but deff get help from someone to hold pieces in place

Sturdy chair
Color: Black
Sturdy. And comfortable. The box had a hole kicked in bottom ,had been retaped many times abd yet was ripped on multiple areas. Coming from Asia does that.
