The 1990 Great Race saw the return of V8 Holden power after a difficult 1989 season. Perkins Engineering’s No.11 VL Commodore showed immense pace from the start, qualifying over four seconds quicker than the previous year and securing 7th position on the grid in the Top Ten Shootout.
Across 161 gruelling laps, Perkins and Mezera fought with precision and grit. Clever strategy and consistent driving saw their naturally aspirated Commodore challenge the turbocharged frontrunners, even leading the race before a poorly timed Safety Car intervention changed their fortunes. Despite the setback, they powered on to secure a hard-fought third-place finish — a testament to the team’s resilience and the enduring spirit of the Holden V8.
