Audio-Technica AT-SB727 Sound Burger Portable Bluetooth Turntable at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The AT-SB727 Sound Burger is a portable Bluetooth turntable from Audio-Technica (Tokyo, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Originally introduced in 1983 as the AT-770, the Sound Burger was reborn in 2022 as a limited-edition 60th anniversary model that sold out globally within days, before entering Audio-Technica's permanent lineup as the AT-SB727. This belt-drive turntable plays both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records and pairs wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.2 with any A2DP-compatible speaker or headphone. A built-in RIAA-equalized phono preamplifier with 36 dB of gain means no external preamp is required, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery delivers up to 12 hours of playback per charge. The AT-SB727 is available in multiple colours and includes a VM-type cartridge with a replaceable ATN3600LC stylus.

Belt-Drive Mechanism, VM Cartridge, and Phono Stage

The AT-SB727 uses a belt-drive system powered by a high-precision DC servo motor, achieving wow and flutter below 0.25% (WTD) and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 50 dB (DIN-B). The tonearm employs a dynamic balance system where stylus pressure is applied via a spring, providing both the mechanical stability needed for accurate tracking and the robustness appropriate for portable use. The die-cast aluminum alloy platter incorporates a damping design to minimise resonance. A VM (Moving Magnet-compatible) cartridge delivers a nominal output level of 150 mV at 1 kHz, while the onboard RIAA-equalized phono preamp at 36 dB gain processes the signal before it reaches the Bluetooth transmitter or the 3.5 mm line output. The included ATN3600LC stylus is fully user-replaceable and can be upgraded to the ATN3600LE elliptical stylus for improved tracking and detail retrieval.

Bluetooth 5.2, Wired Output, and Portable Battery Design

Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity using FHSS spread-spectrum and GFSK/Pi4DQPSK/8DPSK modulation provides a stable wireless link to Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and receivers up to approximately 10 metres line-of-sight, supporting the A2DP and AVRCP profiles with SBC codec. For wired playback, the included 3.5 mm male to dual RCA male audio cable connects directly to any amplifier, powered speaker, or hi-fi receiver with a line-level or aux input, bypassing the Bluetooth system entirely. The lithium-ion battery charges via USB-C at 5V/0.5A over approximately 12 hours and sustains roughly 12 hours of playback on a full charge. The compact housing measures just 100 mm wide by 290 mm deep by 70 mm tall and weighs approximately 900 g, making it genuinely portable for outdoor listening, compact living spaces, or social gatherings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Audio-Technica AT-SB727 Sound Burger?

The Audio-Technica AT-SB727 Sound Burger is a portable, battery-powered belt-drive turntable with Bluetooth 5.2 and a built-in RIAA phono preamplifier. It plays 33-1/3 and 45 RPM vinyl records and streams audio wirelessly to any A2DP-compatible speaker or headphone, or connects via a 3.5 mm to RCA cable for wired output. Originally released as a limited-edition 60th anniversary model in 2022, it joined Audio-Technica's permanent lineup in 2023 as the AT-SB727, available in black, white, and yellow.

How does the AT-SB727 Sound Burger compare to the Pro-Ject Juke Box E1 or Rega Planar 1?

The AT-SB727 occupies a distinct niche from both the Pro-Ject Juke Box E1 and the Rega Planar 1. The Juke Box E1 is a desktop all-in-one with a built-in amplifier and speaker outputs, offering higher output power but no battery or portability. The Rega Planar 1 is a stationary audiophile turntable with a superior tonearm and bearing system that prioritises sonic performance over portability, but it requires a separate phono stage, amplifier, and speakers. The Sound Burger is the only one of the three designed for genuinely portable use, with wireless Bluetooth output, a self-contained battery, and a form factor small enough to take outdoors or to a friend's home.

Does the AT-SB727 need an external phono preamplifier?

No. The AT-SB727 includes a built-in RIAA-equalized phono preamplifier with 36 dB of nominal gain, so its line-level output connects directly to any powered speaker, amplifier aux input, Bluetooth receiver, or headphone with a suitable adapter. No external phono stage is required for either wired or Bluetooth use.

Can I upgrade the stylus on the Sound Burger?

Yes. The AT-SB727 ships with the ATN3600LC stylus, which is fully user-replaceable without tools. The ATN3600LE elliptical stylus is available separately as a direct upgrade, offering a more precise contact point for improved detail retrieval and reduced record wear compared to the standard conical tip of the ATN3600LC. Both styli are widely available from authorised Audio-Technica dealers including Vinyl Sound Toronto.

What Bluetooth speakers or headphones work with the AT-SB727?

The AT-SB727 is compatible with any Bluetooth device that supports the A2DP profile for stereo audio streaming. This includes the Audio-Technica AT-SP65XBT wireless speaker, Sonos Move, JBL Charge 5, and virtually any Bluetooth headphone or speaker on the market. AVRCP support enables basic playback control from compatible receivers. Note that the turntable uses SBC as its sole codec, so aptX or AAC-only receivers will fall back to SBC automatically where supported.

What is the history of the Sound Burger design?

The Sound Burger originated as the Audio-Technica AT-770 in 1983, designed as a portable record player for an era when the Sony Walkman had popularised on-the-go listening. The unusual clamshell design, in which the record is held between the platter and a cover rather than lying flat, gives the player its compact footprint and its nickname. The design was revived in 2022 as a limited-edition 60th anniversary model called the AT-SB2022, with Bluetooth and USB-C charging added; all 7,000 units sold globally within days. Its continued demand led Audio-Technica to make the AT-SB727 a permanent production model in 2023.

Where can I buy the Audio-Technica AT-SB727 Sound Burger in Toronto or Canada?

The Audio-Technica AT-SB727 Sound Burger is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Audio-Technica dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound stocks a curated selection of Audio-Technica turntables, cartridges, stylus upgrades, and compatible accessories. Visit the Vinyl Sound Toronto store or shop online at vinylsound.ca to check current colour availability and stock.

Great Process for Presentation Noobs
Format: Paperback
I had already agreed to give a workshop to my co-workers about how to give more effective presentations when I purchased this book for prep. I immediately adapted the recommended process. After years of creating my own slide decks I have my quirky development process. Following the guidelines in this book will allow anyone at any skill level to methodically create a dynamic slide deck and give a speech that will move the audience to action. I wish I'd had it 35 years ago, when I first started making slide decks, before I learned the hard way that bullets kill.

ESSENTIAL and Good for More Than Just Presentations
Format: Kindle
This is the second time I purchased this book. I had an older edition and decided to purchase the update. I'm glad I did, as this expands and improves upon the first edition. The book is absolutely essential for anyone putting together a presentation. Not only does it provide sound theories behind persuasion and storytelling, it makes the process dead-simple with an easy-to-follow template. And this template works for more than just presentations. The structure works for pretty much any content you're creating whether that's a presentation or a blog post or a video. Can't recommend this highly enough.

Follow the template
Format: Paperback
Not much different from the 2005 ed, which was good Version 4, it is practically verbatim. The only major change I can see is the Story Template changed all of the terminology and dropped Act III all together leaving it pretty much up to the reader to figure out how to close the presentation. I prefer the V.1 template over this one. Slicker paper and color photos, and the story boarding is more developed. Following the template is key to pulling the presentation off. A good portion of the book is still geared toward a Corporate audience with the assumption that the reader is an upper-level manager with a team of employees to do your work for you. Know what you are getting into. The creation of an effective 15 minute presentation can take hours for a solopreneur. I use the 45 minute format to create 15/20 minute training videos. I will recommend this book to anyone who creates and delivers PPT presentations, can focus and stick to the plan.
